ABOUT THE PROJECT
I picked this project during a Visual Design course at GA.
It stood out amongst other options due to the complexity and depth that was involved in building a music website, other more popular project were too focused on visuals. My goal was ambitious, create a product that was ready for the masses and that could compete with the already established music sites out there.
I started by defining our target audience, young professionals with high interest in discovering new music. After several iterations I came up with a discovery tool that would be enticing enough to catch the attention of users.
I used knobs as a selection button for different filters. This made the interaction more memorable and nostalgic by making a play on retro radios, mimicking how music discovery was done in the past.
going the extra mile
The project only constituted of designing the website; however, most music software is mainly used on mobile, and I just couldn't get those knobs out of my head... It was a solid solution for web but I knew it would not work on mobile. The version below shows how I adapted the discovery feature to mobile without losing the essence of the product.
the drawing board
Sketches of early and final version of the website. On the later version, I enhanced the music discovery feature by adding the knobs.
Early sketches of the mobile app. Here I experimented with how I would adapt the discovery feature on mobile.
and then, the logo was created
On the left some of the early sketches I experimented with when creating the logo. None of those options were working for the brand so not much time was spent on them.
I had a clear idea, the logo needed to convey young, fresh and contemporary.
The end result, a minimalistic, easy to remember logo that can be adapted across platforms, recognizable on any size and color.
